On Saturday, June 1st our Jazz Ensemble I had the honor and privilege of performing with Dr. Puglisi, superintendent of the Rio School District, and his ensemble the River Band. Opening the Rio School District Festival, the River Band and Jazz Ensemble I collaboratively performed original charts including Sound Engineers, St. Francis Dam, Just Move and Dancing in Their Shoes. After this performance, our jazz ensemble played several charts including Latin favorites like Manteca, Morning Mambo, Corcovado and Empanada Caliente. Both performances included lots of student solo improvisations!
Later that same evening, our Symphonic Band students joined the final performance of the Rio School District festival performing with elementary, junior high and other high schools band students. This mass ensemble performance included selections from Beauty and the Beast, Daydreams and Andromeda. A special thank you to Dr. Puglisi and his staff & Doug Williamson – – band director at Rio Vista School, for inviting us to this event once again!

STUDENTS VS FACULTY BASKETBALL GAME
The Faculty-Student Basketball game on Wednesday concluded with a 51-34 score in favor of faculty. Students, parents, and friends attended to support and heckle team members, and all- in-all it was a success. Coach Collins and all the other coaches look forward to next year’s basketball season, and had a great time in their final match against the departing seniors as well as other team members.
MIGRANT AWARDS NIGHT
The Migrant Awards Night celebration at PHS was amazing on Thursday Night. Shout out to
@MrCalderon_phs for his inspiring keynote address in which he described his educational and career journey while inspiring our parents / students.
Mrs. Carson & Mrs. Behniwal attended a course last Friday, on Patient Care & Bioethics at School of Nursing at Ventura College. The 4 Guiding Principles of Bioethics & Resilience in the Nursing field were topics that were covered.
AP Reader Conference for Language and Composition
Ms. Kara Hamilon attended the AP Reader Conference for Language and Composition Conference this past week.
“I have never embarked, no–embraced, no–enjoyed, no—been challenged quite like this.
The AP reader conference has reaffirmed that much of what we are doing as a department and as a faculty; however, it has also reminded me that our students have much to improve upon to compete on a more universal stage.
The consensus that comes from thousands comparing and conversing about student writing encourages me to push for more collaborative time dedicated to writing for my team and students.
The days are long: 8 am to 5 pm. The essays books of bricks. Many are poor. Some are epiphanies tipped onto the page. Either way it is a beauty to be part of this group of supportive readers—cheering students to score well, to make connections.
The experience reminds me of a line from The Great Gatsby: “Reserving judgments is a matter of infinite hope. I am still a little afraid of missing something”. I love knowing there are others out there that want to see something great in kids too”
COFFEE WITH THE PRINCIPAL/FAREWELL PARTY
Last Friday, Principal Lawrence hosted the last Coffee with the Principal of the 2018-19 school year. We had a great parent turn out and some good discussions on ways to support our students next year here at PHS. Lawrence appreciates all the parents who have taken the time to come to one of his meetings this year. Building a relationship between parents and the school is one of the BEST way for a students success!.
Some of our parents stayed back and helped the Staff celebrate our SRO Officer, Hector Balderama. He has been a Triton for the last 3 years and will be leaving PHS this coming school year. With his bravery, hard work, great attitude and friendly smile, he will TRULY be missed here at Pacifica High School. Thank you Officer Balderama for everything you have done for us here at PHS. We can never say thank you enough for all you have done for our campus. Our Staff and Students will miss you truly and we wish you nothing but the best in all your future endeavors. You will always be a Triton here at TritonLand.
The Last DPAC/DELAC meeting held at the District office where we had over 20 parents from Pacifica High School in attendance. Nutrition Services provided samples of the food and salads being provided to our students during lunchtime.
This was a very important meeting as elections took place for 4-elective officers. Results of the elections for the ELAC district office is: President: Parent/Sr. Juan Arellano from PHS, Vice-President: Parent/Sra. Maria Teresa Torres from OHS, Secretary: Parent/Sr. Isaldo Arellano from PHS and Sgt. of Arms: Parent/Sra. Sandra Mejia from PHS. We had lots of parents from PHS selected for officers and their speeches were amazing! We have a lot of parent leaders at our school!
Staff present… PHS Assistant Principal Ms. Angelita Sandoval, Mrs. Maria Maldonado & Mrs. Claudia Naranjo.
