HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM ALL OF US AT PACIFICA HIGH SCHOOL!
It was by far the best college tour experience because our guide was a former AVID student when she was in high school. She gave the kids a wonderful pep talk, emphasizing that she is at UCSB because of AVID and how the program really worked for her. Students also heard a presentation from the head admissions counselor. He was happy they were there because students MUST starting preparing for a university like UCSB their freshman year of high school. He expects close to 100,000 applications this year to UCSB and the competition is fierce.
Then Mr. Calderon and some AVID students volunteered at the Santa to the Sea Half Marathon on Sunday, Dec 9 in the early morning. The kids did a great job collecting and helping tag the items that runners dropped off and unloaded and installed barriers along the starting line. Our students had a great time too.
AP Psychology dissected sheep brains this week. They have been studying cognitive neuroscience and the biological basis of behavior for the last few weeks. This week they were able to do a hands on lab, which allowed them to identify the parts of the brain and its function.
On Tuesday, Dec. 18th & Wednesday, Dec. 19th, the PHS Advanced Dance Class traveled to Moorpark Community College to participate as guest performers in their Evening of Dance. Israel Vargas & Aurora Rugerio performed a beautiful contemporary duet to the song “SheWolf”. They impressed the audience with their partnering technique as well as their storytelling. The audience especially loved our African/Brazilian fusion number to “Circle of Life” choreographed by guest teacher Mrs. Annie Ransom.
On Tuesday, December 18th our Symphonic Band hosted their annual winter concert. The concert featured a variety of pieces including a traditional march by Karl King, math and music meshing together in Algoryhthms and A Stowaway on Santa’s Sleigh featuring a variety of holiday songs from around the world! Thank you to all of the parents, students, staff and faculty who attended this special event!
Pacifica ASB held a free winter movie night on Wednesday, Dec.19. About 150 students came out to the quad to watch “the Grinch” and enjoy popcorn, hot chocolate, and pizza.
Counselors attended the High School Counselor Exchange at Ventura College. Topics of discussion included the following: Financial aid updates, Ventura College foundation updates, and Assembly Bill No. 705. Counselors had the opportunity to tour the criminal justice and water science facility. This event provided a great opportunity for professional development.
On December 19, 2018, counselors provided the 7 children in the Cal-Safe Teen Parent Program with toys for Christmas. On behalf of the counseling team, we’d like to thank Toys for Tots for donating the toys. A big thank you to Ester Dominguez and Angel Silva for dressing up as Elf and Santa.
Last Tuesday Parent Project wrapped up their 10-week series of workshops held here at Pacifica. Classes were held in both English and Spanish on topics such as: family communication, discipline/structure, alcohol/drugs and more. Parents from schools throughout our district attended the classes presented by the Ventura County Probation Agency and the Oxnard Police Department.
